In 1925 Helen Keller challenged the Lions International to be the "Knights of the Blind." Today the leading cause of blindness is diabetes. As a response to that 1925 challenge, the West Peoria Lions Club will be handing out information on diabetes and accepting donations for the American Diabetes Association on Friday and Saturday, April 2 and 3, at Haddad's Market.
During the month of April Haddad's cashiers will be asking customers to donate to Camp Lions, a summer camp for the visually and hearing impaired children. The names of those who donate will be placed on cards, which will be displayed in the Haddad's window during April. Later the cards will be placed in a collage and taken to Camp Lions to show the campers how much support they receive from this community.
The West Peoria Lions "Green Team" will be sprucing up the roadside along Rt.8 on Saturday April 10, weather permitting (rain date April 11). Boy Scouts Troop 11 will be helping the Lions Club members, and others wishing to help out with this community project are welcome. Call Carolyn @ 673-6207 to sign up.
The Lions will be participating in the West Peoria Community Clean-up Day on April 24. The Lions' Green Team will be collecting and recycling glasses, hearing aids, cell phones, can tabs, aluminum cans, keys, and ink cartridges. Please bring these items to Clean-up Day to donate to the Lions Club.

Perhaps residents saw Lions Club members with members of Boy Scout Troop 11 walking along Route 8 on Saturday, November 7. Together these two groups participated in the Lions Club's first Highway Clean-up program. They walked a two-mile stretch of Route 8, starting at Farmington Road and Park and then proceeding down Southport Road to the Pottstown city limits.
Car parts, a lawn mower blade, soda cans and bottles, dirty diapers, and numerous soda and coffee cups were among the items cluttering the highway. A couple of the scouts increased their troop's treasury with some money they found along the route.
A Dining Tour Book offered by the Lions Club would make a great Christmas gift. These books can be purchased at Haddad's Market.
The Lions Club also has 100% Soy Candles in a wide variety of scents for sale. Call Carolyn @ 673-6207.
The Lions Club wishes everyone Happy Holidays and a sincere Thank You for all the continued support.

The West Peoria Lions Club is currently busy with four fundraising efforts. The profits from these efforts will be used to buy glasses and hearing aids for the hearing and visually impaired, to pay for the Christmas Food Baskets given to the less fortunate in the community, and to help run hearing and vision programs.
The Lions Club is currently selling a Greater Peoria Dining Tour Book for $30. These books of 300 coupons from 97 restaurants are good until November 2010. Using just a few of these coupons will save the $30 paid for the book. Call Emil at 693-1191 or stop at Haddad's to get a coupon book.
Place orders now for Christmas wreaths, swags, and garlands by calling 673-6107. These are gifts that can be delivered anywhere in the United States.
Another great gift idea is the 100% Soy Candles that come in many scents and burn smoke free. The Lions Club will be selling them in Farmington at the Old School Center during Spoon River Days. Call in orders to 673-6107.
The Lions Club will be at Haddad's on Friday, October 16 for Candy Day. Please support the Lions Club by buying these items, which also make wonderful gifts. The Lions Club cordially invites newcomers to join them on the fourth Monday of every month.

The West Peoria Lions Club is gearing up for some busy months. West Peorians and their friends can visit Lions Club members at the Jamboree on June 6, when they will be selling hot dogs, brats, and popcorn. Back by popular demand-glow sticks, bracelets, and necklaces will be available for kids (young and old).
Of course, the Lions Club as a West Peoria Fourth of July Parade sponsor will be busy greeting members of the band from Clonmel, Ireland, and presenting each of them with a patriotic pin. West Peoria residents can help offset the cost of these pins by purchasing their own pins to wear to the parade. The pins are available at Haddad's or by calling 673-6207.
Also, remember that the Lions Club accepts glasses, tabs, old keys, aluminum cans, ink cartridges, and cell phones to be recycled.
New members are cordially invited to join the West Peoria Lions Club, a member of the largest service organization in the world that helps people in need.

The West Peoria Lions Club needs the help of our readers to help in the club's efforts to save the sight of children with low vision-severe vision impairing disorders that cannot be corrected without medical treatment, surgery, and/or conventional glasses or lenses.
"Seeing is Believing" is a statewide low vision evaluation program for vision impaired youth. This program is provided by the Lions of Illinois Foundation in conjunction with the Deicke Eye Center for Visual Rehabilitation and the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. The West Peoria Lions Club and other Lions Clubs have fund raisers throughout the year to raise monies to donate to the foundation so that this program can continue free of charge to the children. This program costs $290 per student. There are more than 1,600 students with low vision in Illinois Public Schools. Help the Lions Club continue this and other needed programs for the vision and hearing impaired in our community by becoming a member of the West Peoria Lions Club. Call Jim or Carolyn @ 673-6207 for further information. The children of your community will thank you.
